Part of what I love about teaching art is the ability to change lessons from year to year. I've got a handful of staples I absolutely love to do year after year (mandalas, continuous line drawings, ugly face pots, etc.), but finding new lessons is always exciting. My all time favorite place to find new lessons lately is Pinterest. (Where was Pinterest when I was in college hunting for new ideas!?!)
There are a few reasons why finding lessons through Pinterest has my heart. First, I get to organize. As a teacher, especially an art teacher, being organized is really a necessity. The ability to group ideas by grade level is awesome. My second reason why I love lesson planning via Pinterest shouldn't come as any shock, I'm incredibly visual. Being able to see images of final products helps me evaluate when to best use that lesson. It also makes searching for something on the fly easier.
My third reason for loving Pinterest lessons might be the biggest for me. It is incredibly important to me to always be learning. I don't know everything there is to know about art, or teaching, and Pinterest allows me to be a constant learner, with whatever time I have for the day. If I've only got five minutes, no problem, I can easily browse and might stumble upon something I think might be of value. I can save it for later, and go back when I've got more time to dedicate.
Through Pinterest I've found countless lessons, blogs, videos, and even artists, that I never would have found otherwise. Not every lesson I find on Pinterest works out (last week's snow globes with 5B would be a perfect example!), but I always learn something. I know that this constant learning helps make me a better teacher.
